Olympics: Japan brushes past Canada for 1st curling win of games.
Japan notched its first win of the Beijing Winter Olympics women's curling tournament Friday, prevailing 8-5 against a Canada team that repeatedly failed to capitalize with the hammer.
Skipper Satsuki Fujisawa and team Loco Solare scored against the hammer in the first, fourth and fifth ends on the way to a convincing victory at the National Aquatics Centre.
The result left world No. 7 Japan with a 1-1 record in round-robin play following an 8-5 defeat to reigning Olympic champion Sweden the previous day.

Olympics: ROC skater Valieva failed doping test, IOC seeks games ban.
Russian figure skating prodigy Kamila Valieva failed a doping test at a national meet last December and will have her further participation at the Beijing Winter Olympics decided by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the International Testing Agency said Friday.
The ITA said the 15-year-old Valieva, who helped the Russian Olympic Committee win figure skating team gold in Beijing, failed the test taken at the Russian national championships on Dec. 25, with her sample coming back positive on Feb. 8.

Vague Kishida dubbed ‘Mr. Consideration’ by opposition.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s habit of giving vague answers to questions in the Diet has earned him the nickname “Mr. Consideration” by at least one frustrated opposition party lawmaker.

3 teachers indicted over deaths of 8 in avalanche in 2017.
Prosecutors in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, have indicted three teachers over the deaths of seven students and one teacher who were caught in an avalanche during a mountain climbing lesson on a ski slope in Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture, in 2017.
Forty other students and teachers were injured in the avalanche that hit the group at around 8:30 a.m. on March 27, 2017, at Nasuonsen Family Ski Resort.

Mizuho Bank suffers ATM system failure, 11th since Feb. 2021.
Mizuho Bank experienced a system failure that disrupted ATMs on Friday, the major Japanese banking group said, marking the 11th system failure since February last year.
The bank has not made public how many ATMs were affected, but it stopped 90 ATMs to conduct maintenance and inspection work. The disruption occurred around 9 a.m. and continued until around 4:30 p.m.

47-yr-old in Japan accused of altering driver's license age to go to matchmaking events.
A 47-year-old man in the central Japan city of Toyota has been referred to prosecutors on Feb. 9 over allegations he altered his driver's license to make him appear younger when he went to matchmaking events.
The man was referred to the Nagoya District Public Prosecutors by Toyota Police Station on two allegations: counterfeiting and using official documents, and improperly obtaining a driving license.

TV Asahi president resigns over misuse of company funds.
The president of TV Asahi Corp. stepped down Thursday after he was found to have misappropriated company funds for personal use, according to the Japanese broadcaster.
TV Asahi's board of directors accepted the resignation of Keiji Kameyama, with Chairman Hiroshi Hayakawa to now also serve as president, the broadcaster said.

Baby born to anonymous mom should be listed in family register.
The Kumamoto District Legal Affairs Bureau has instructed a hospital here to have a newborn recorded in a family register, even if the birth of the baby is not officially registered.

BOJ applies minus interest rate for MUFG Bank deposits.

Japan’s tech giant Toshiba to split; sell stake in Carrier.
Embattled Japanese technology giant Toshiba plans to split into two companies, one focused on infrastructure and the other on devices, in its latest effort to placate unhappy shareholders.
As part of the proposed plan, Tokyo-based Toshiba Corp. intends to sell its joint venture stake in Toshiba Carrier to the U.S.-based Carrier Group, for about 100 billion yen. Toshiba is also selling Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems and Toshiba Lighting & Technology, it said Monday.

Australia to open borders to vaccinated travelers on Feb. 21.
Australia will open its borders to all vaccinated tourists and business travelers from Feb. 21 in a further relaxation of pandemic restrictions announced Monday.
Australia imposed some of the world's toughest travel restrictions on its citizens and permanent residents in March 2020 to prevent them from bringing COVID-19 home.

Taiwanese supplier to chip producers announces expansion.
GlobalWafers Co., which supplies silicon wafers to semiconductor manufacturers, says it will invest $3.6 billion in facilities in Asia, the United States and Europe after its attempt to acquire Germany’s Siltronic AG failed.
Sunday’s announcement comes amid shortages of processor chips and other semiconductors that are disrupting auto manufacturing, smartphone and other industries. Producers are announcing plans to expand output, which will boost demand for wafers.

Toray says it illegally gained global safety certificates for resin products.
Chemical giant Toray Industries Inc has admitted falsifying samples of some of its resin products to illegally acquire global safety certifications, with the conduct dating back at least 10 years.
The samples of resins used in products such as vehicles were submitted to conform to specific flame resistance standards set by U.S. safety group but they were testing samples and not the ones actually used in its commercially sold products, Toray said in a press release.

“It’s unbelievable. It’s like a dream,” Tanaka, a 17-year-old from Higashiosaka, Osaka Prefecture, said while wiping away tears. “It was not perfect, but dancing at this dream stage gave me a lot of fun.”

The Oil Information Center says the average retail price of regular gasoline nationwide was 170.9 yen, or one dollar and 49 cents, per liter as of Monday. That was up 0.4 percent from the week earlier.
Panasonic's April-Dec. net profit up on brisk sales of EV batteries.

Panasonic Corp. on Wednesday reported a net profit of 195.63 billion yen ($1.70 billion) in the April-December period, up 50.3 percent from a year earlier, on the back of strong sales of batteries for electric vehicles.

Sony raises FY 2021 profit outlook on firm movie business, weak yen.
Sony Group Corp. on Wednesday raised its operating profit outlook for the current business year to a record 1.20 trillion yen, as solid movie and mobile gaming segments along with a weak yen against the U.S. dollar are expected to make up for weak sales of its PlayStation 5 game consoles amid a global chip crunch.

The operator of the Keio railway line in Tokyo has unveiled a plan to install security cameras in all of its stations and train cars, following last year's attack by a knife-wielding man on one of its trains.
Keio Corporation has mapped out a set of emergency measures based on lessons from the attack in which a man with a knife injured passengers on a train in Chofu City, western Tokyo.

Japan’s doors remain closed to most foreign students.
Japan began welcoming 87 foreign students to the country on Sunday, the first such arrivals since strict rules were enforced in response to the spread of the novel coronavirus. And on Tuesday, it granted permission to enter to 400 more students.
About 147,000 foreign students have obtained permission to study in Japan, but due to the government’s tight border-control measures, the vast majority of them have not yet been granted permission to actually enter the country.
