Munitions found at Okinawa dam likely to belong to U.S. forces.
The Okinawa prefectural government stopped drawing water from the Kurashiki dam after officials discovered unexploded ordnances and drums containing projectile shells in the mud there, it announced on Feb. 17.
The spot where the old munitions were discovered is normally submerged when the dam is full. But the water level was low when officials were conducting an inspection of the dam and discovered the ammunition and large metal drums.

Olympics: IOC's Bach says Valieva figure skating spectacle 'chilling'.
A day after 15-year-old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva suffered a meltdown on sport's biggest stage, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said the doping scandal and its fallout "disturbed" him.

JAL eyes rebound, reopens hiring process.

Vice principal, teacher in Osaka accused of hiding confiscated cannabis from police.
Police here sent papers on a private high school vice principal and teacher to public prosecutors on Feb. 18 on suspicion of hiding cannabis confiscated from a student without reporting it to the authorities.
The 70-year-old vice principal and 45-year-old teacher at Kokoku High School in Osaka's Tennoji Ward were reported to prosecutors on suspicion of concealing evidence and cannabis possession.

Ex-company executive ordered to pay 50 million yen for headhunting.
The Tokyo District Court ordered a former consulting company executive to pay 50 million yen for luring his former subordinates to a rival firm he moved to, saying he violated his previous employer’s bylaws against headhunting.
In its ruling issued on Feb. 16, the court called the headhunting a “treacherous” act that cannot be justified in light of social norms.

NBA: Washington's Rui Hachimura goes for 20 in win over Brooklyn.
Rui Hachimura broke the 20-point mark for the first time this season in a 117-103 win on Thursday for his Washington Wizards over the reeling Brooklyn Nets.
Hachimura scored 20 points on 8-for-15 shooting at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, making both three-point shots he attempted in the victory.

Japan racked up a 2.2 trillion yen trade deficit last month, an eight-year high, as the cost of energy imports soared, the government said Thursday.
The Finance Ministry said exports edged up 9.6 percent in January from the same month the previous year. Imports jumped 39.6 percent, resulting in the sixth straight month of trade deficits, it said.
The amount is the biggest since January 2014, when the trade deficit totaled nearly 2.8 trillion yen.

NATO: Russia misleads world on troop movements near Ukraine.
NATO allies accused Russia of misleading the world by saying it was returning some troops to bases, reporting that Moscow has instead added as many as 7,000 more forces near its tense border with Ukraine. The alliance warned Thursday that the buildup has only strengthened its resolve.
After a handful of positive signals from Russia that eased tensions earlier in the week, the pendulum appeared to be swinging in the opposite direction again.

Japan demands China release Japanese man from detention.
The Japanese government is demanding the immediate release of a Japanese national in his 50s who was detained by Chinese authorities in Shanghai last year.
“On various levels and on many occasions, we have strongly urged China to grant an early release of this Japanese national,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said at a news conference on Feb. 17.

OLYMPICS: Miho Takagi wins 1st individual gold in 1,000-meter speed skating.
Miho Takagi won her fourth speedskating medal of the Beijing Games and the first individual gold of her career with an Olympic-record victory in the women’s 1,000 meters Thursday.

Instead, five proposals by Zojirushi were given approval at a regular meeting of shareholders in the city of Osaka, western Japan, including the extension of takeover defense measures opposed by Galanz, a major Chinese appliance maker.
14-year-old boy arrested after attacking classmate with knife at school.

Police in Nabari, Mie Prefecture, have arrested a 14-year-old boy after he stabbed a 14-year-old classmate in the neck with a knife in a corridor at their school.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 10 a.m. outside a classroom on the second floor, Sankei Shimbun reported. The victim was taken to hospital where doctors said his wound was not life-threatening.

Osaka Marathon to be held minus 20,000 'citizen runners' to prevent COVID spread.
The combined 10th Osaka Marathon and 77th Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon will be held without the usual 20,000 amateur "citizen" runners to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections, Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura revealed on Feb. 15.
The Osaka Prefectural Government is one of the race's organizers. The Feb. 27 event will be held in the city of Osaka with just around 300 runners, men and women, in the elite division.

US Disney World: No more masks indoors for vaccinated visitors.
Starting this week, the masks are coming off for vaccinated visitors to Walt Disney World in Florida.
The theme park resort announced Tuesday that face coverings will be optional for fully-vaccinated visitors in all indoor and outdoor locations, with one exception. Face masks still will be needed for visitors ages 2 and older on enclosed transportation, such as the resort's monorail, buses and the resort's sky gondola.

It will make him the first member of the imperial family in postwar Japan to enroll in a senior high school other than Gakushuin University’s senior high school.

Nine surgeons to quit hospital over ‘power harassment’.
Otsu Municipal Hospital here announced Feb. 15 that nine surgeons are quitting. The doctors are citing “power harassment” that left them no choice but to leave.
The surgeons are among a group of 10 specialists working in departments handling surgery, digestive surgery and breast surgery. The hospital is categorized as a “local incorporated administrative agency” under Japanese law.

Small quakes reported near North Korea nuclear site amid talk of resumed testing.
A series of small, natural earthquakes has struck near North Korea’s shuttered nuclear test site, South Korea has said, highlighting the area’s geological instability as Pyongyang hints it could resume testing for the first time since 2017.
At least four earthquakes have hit the region in the past five days, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration in Seoul.

Ministry panel to review replacing unprofitable railway lines.
It's looking like the last stop is ahead for many unprofitable railway lines, as the transport ministry has formed a panel to consider ways to help railway companies ditch these burdens.
For years, this has been a major headache for local companies operating in rural areas where populations have decreased.
But the slowdown in economic activity due to the novel coronavirus pandemic has also begun to hit some major companies, such as JR East  and West.

ANA, Toyota, Joby to tie up on flying car venture.
ANA Holdings Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and U.S. mobility firm Joby Aviation will start considering a business tie-up in the field of flying cars, sources said.
With the entry of the Japan’s largest airline, the air transportation network can be fully developed to reach places that are too close or impractical for an airplane but inconveniently far by bus or taxi.

Japanese skier Watabe wins bronze medal in the Nordic combined large hill.
Two-time silver medalist Akito Watabe won the bronze medal in the individual normal hill of Nordic combined on Tuesday at the Beijing Winter Olympics. This is his third consecutive medal at the Winter Olympics since 2014.
Watabe had won silver medals in the combined normal hill event, which combines jumping and a 10-kilometer cross-country race, in Sochi in 2014 and in Pyeongchang in 2018.e Station at Teramae Station in Kamikawa, Hyogo Prefecture, where the train was scheduled to stop.

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force said it has found the bodies of two pilots who were aboard an F-15 fighter that crashed into the Sea of Japan in late January.
The first body was discovered last Friday and the other one on Sunday in waters near the crash site about 5 kilometers west-northwest of the Komatsu Air Base in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, according to the ASDF.

Angry smoker on train in Kansai causes delays for 450 passengers.
A passenger smoking in the restroom on a no-smoking train linking Hyogo and Osaka prefectures went into a frenzy and grabbed the conductor by the collar after being told to put out the cigarette on Feb. 13.
The conductor contacted a division of the Fukuchiyama branch office of JR West to seek instructions. The smoker was handed over to officers from the Fukusaki Police Station at Teramae Station in Kamikawa, Hyogo Prefecture, where the train was scheduled to stop.
