Japan to consider easing nonresident foreigner entry ban: Prime Minister Kishida.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Saturday the government will consider easing an entry ban on nonresident foreigners introduced in November to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, amid growing criticism from academic and business circles.
He did not clearly state when the border control could be eased, with the current measures scheduled to end on Feb. 28.

Mean temperature in Japan's northeast may rise by 4.6 C by end of the century: JMA.
At the end of the 21st century, the annual average temperature in Japan's northeast will have risen by as much as 4.6 degrees Celsius, according to calculations by the Japan Meteorological Agency's Sendai Regional Headquarters.
The regional HQ also projected that the area would see twice as many days with heavy rainfall of over 100 millimeters.

Toyota expands electric car parts production at 2 U.S. plants.
Toyota announced Friday that it will further expand production of electric vehicle parts at plants in West Virginia and Tennessee in a $90 million investment.
The announcement comes three months after the Japanese automaker said it would invest $240 million to add a production line dedicated to hybrid powertrains at its facility in Buffalo, West Virginia. The latest upgrade involves spending $73 million at the plant to annually assemble an estimated 120,000 rear motor stators, a key component in electric motors.

60-kg wing component missing from cargo plane in Japan may have fallen off mid-flight.
Inspectors at Narita International Airport discovered on Feb. 11 that a component covering a part of a Boeing 747-8 cargo plane's left wing had gone missing.
According to the transport ministry's Narita Airport office, the some 60-kg cover is made of metal and plastic, and is 4.4 meters long and 60 centimeters wide. It may have fallen off during flight from Shanghai for operated by the Nippon Cargo Airlines Co..

Sota Fujii becomes youngest shogi player with 5 major titles.
Shogi prodigy Sota Fujii took another step Saturday toward his ultimate goal of winning all of the board game's eight major titles by claiming his fifth as the youngest player in history at age 19 and 6 months.

5 die, 1 missing in late-night blaze at Niigata rice cracker plant.
Five people perished and one is still missing after a late-night fire at a rice cracker factory here that operated around the clock.
The blaze broke out around 11:45 p.m. on Feb. 11 at the Sanko Seika Co. plant and was extinguished nearly 12 hours later.
Among the dead were four female part-time workers in their 60s and 70s.
Twenty-two fire trucks and rescue vehicles were dispatched to the scene of the fire, which was extinguished at 11:10 a.m. on Feb. 12.

Tokyo primary school teacher arrested over photos of student changing.
A 46-year-old teacher at a Tokyo elementary school was arrested on Feb. 12 on suspicion of breaking child pornography laws by keeping photos of his student getting changed on a smartphone.
The Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigation Division arrested the suspect, who lives in the city of Saitama, on suspicion of possessing child pornography and violating the child prostitution and child pornography law.
