The Tokyo metropolitan government on Saturday reported 21,122 new coronavirus cases, up 1,324 from Friday and up 3,609 from last Saturday.
The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is 44, up three from Friday, health officials said. The nationwide figure is 1,099, up 57 from Friday.
Yokozuna Terunofuji among 17 to test positive for COVID-19.
Yokozuna Terunofuji was among a total of 17 sumo wrestlers, stablemasters and a referee to have newly tested positive for COVID-19, the Japan Sumo Association said late Friday.
The tests carried out Thursday ahead of February events saw the latest batch of positive tests added to seven previous infections that included newly promoted ozeki Mitakeumi.
3 arrested in Tokyo for insider trading over COVID-19 drug.
Three men were arrested by Tokyo police Feb. 4 on suspicion of involvement in an insider trading scheme revolving around the purchase of shares in a company developing a pharmaceutical to treat COVID-19.
The suspects stand accused of violating the Financial Instruments and Exchange Law.
The Metropolitan Police Department said it suspects the trio purchased shares of Tella Inc., a Tokyo-based venture capital firm involved in the medical sector.
French, German leaders to visit Russia, Ukraine amid tension.
The French president and the German chancellor will head to Moscow and Kyiv in the coming weeks, adding to diplomatic efforts to try to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin from launching an invasion of Ukraine and find a way out of the growing tensions.
France's Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to visit Moscow on Monday and Kyiv on Tuesday, while Germany's Olaf Scholz will travel to Kyiv on Feb. 14 and Moscow on Feb. 15.
Malaysia's ex-PM Mahathir discharged from heart hospital.
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was discharged Saturday from the National Heart Institute two weeks after he was admitted and will recuperate at home, the hospital said.
The 96-year-old two-time former premier, once the world's oldest leader, was admitted to the coronary care unit on Jan. 20 for the third time in just over a month. The latest hospital stay followed an elective medical procedure at the same facility on Jan. 7. In December, he was admitted for a full medical checkup and observation.
Large-size fries back on the McDonald's menu on Feb. 7.
Medium- and large-size portions will go back on sale from 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 7 at all 2,900 or so McDonald’s Japan outlets, the company announced.
Sales of the larger portions were suspended from Christmas Eve due to difficulties securing supplies and distribution snarl-ups.
But sufficient inventory is now secured with a different shipping route in the works, the company said.

Habu, 51, was defeated Feb. 4 in a match of the class A league to determine the challenger to the Meijin title holder. The defeat dropped Habu’s record to a 2-6 in league play, assuring his demotion to the class B.
Habu has held the Meijin title nine times and been in the top class A league over a period covering 29 straight years when he was not the title holder.
