A heavy snow warning has already been issued for parts of Tokyo area. The warning may be extended to include central Tokyo.
Temperatures dropped to nearly zero degrees Celsius in Tokyo's Nerima Ward on Thursday. Snow had started to accumulate on roads there around noon.

A Japanese health ministry panel on Thursday approved the use of an oral COVID-19 pill developed by Pfizer Inc., increasing the treatment options for people with mild symptoms.
Paxlovid, a combination of two antiviral drugs, nirmatrelvir and ritonavir, is set to become the second oral drug for mild coronavirus infections available in Japan, which has been seeing surging cases driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant.

Tonga's virus outbreak growing rapidly; omicron confirmed.
Coronavirus cases continue to rise rapidly in Tonga, and tests have confirmed that the particularly contagious omicron variant is behind the isolated Pacific island nation's first community outbreak since the start of the pandemic, officials said Thursday.
Health Minister Saia Piukala told reporters that 31 more people had tested positive for the virus, nearly doubling Tonga's active cases for the second day in a row to a total of 64, the online Matangi Tonga news portal and other media reported.

OLYMPICS/ Russian skate star tested positive for banned drug.
Kamila Valieva, the 15-year-old Russian superstar who was expected to deliver her nation its third straight Olympic gold medal in women’s figure skating, tested positive for a banned heart medication before the Beijing Games, the Russian newspaper RBC reported.
The sample was reportedly obtained before Valieva won the European championship last month in Estonia, a performance that solidified her status as the leader of Russia’s “quad squad” of elite women’s figure skaters headed to Beijing.

Spacex’s newest fleet of satellites is tumbling out of orbit after being struck by a solar storm.
Up to 40 of the 49 small satellites launched last week have either reentered the atmosphere and burned up, or are on the verge of doing so, the company said in an online update Tuesday night.
SpaceX said a geomagnetic storm last Friday made the atmosphere denser, which increased the drag on the Starlink satellites, effectively dooming them.

Uniqlo holds Studio Ghibli exhibition in Bangkok in 1st collaboration.
Uniqlo Thailand said Thursday it is holding a Studio Ghibli exhibition in the capital Bangkok and selling a commemorative T-shirt collection and tote bags, in the first collaboration with Japan's renowned animation studio.
The exhibition at the CentralWorld shopping mall features Totoro and the Cat Bus from the classic anime movie "My Neighbor Totoro," as well as calligraphy by studio producer Toshio Suzuki. The fast-moving feline character is large enough for visitors to get inside.

TV Asahi president resigns over misuse of company funds.
The president of TV Asahi Corp. stepped down Thursday after he was found to have misappropriated company funds for personal use, according to the Japanese broadcaster.
TV Asahi's board of directors accepted the resignation of Keiji Kameyama, with Chairman Hiroshi Hayakawa to now also serve as president, the broadcaster said.

Baby born to anonymous mom should be listed in family register.
The Kumamoto District Legal Affairs Bureau has instructed a hospital here to have a newborn recorded in a family register, even if the birth of the baby is not officially registered.
The directive follows a request from Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto city for a legal opinion on its confidential birth system, which seeks to register a baby without the mother's name.
