Japan's daily COVID cases top 100,000 for 1st time.
Japan's daily COVID-19 cases exceeded 100,000 for the first time on Thursday as the country struggles to contain a sixth wave of infections, driven by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Tokyo recorded 20,679 coronavirus infections.
The cumulative total of coronavirus cases in Japan had topped 3 million as of Thursday, according to a Kyodo News tally based on local government releases.

Supercomputer underscores need for ‘distance’ to fight Omicron.
The probability of infection with the Omicron variant is greatly lowered with distance, mask wearing and other measures, but the strain still spreads more easily than the Delta strain, according to Fugaku supercomputer simulations.
Before conducting the simulations, the team at the Riken research institute estimated that the Omicron variant was 1.5 times more contagious than the Delta variant, based on results of epidemiological research and other sources.

BOJ deputy chief says 'too early' to tighten Japan monetary policy.
It is "too early" for the Bank of Japan to tighten monetary policy as the economy's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic has just begun, Deputy Governor Masazumi Wakatabe said Thursday.
Wakatabe's statement came as some financial market players have suggested that the BOJ should move toward tightening monetary policy before achieving its 2 percent inflation target to keep in step with U.S. and European central banks, which are shifting toward normalization to tamp down prices.

JOC struggling to find sponsors due to prices, politics and pandemic.
The Japanese Olympic Committee is having difficulty finding sponsors after significantly hiking its rates, but it is not expected to suffer a financial hit from commercial partnerships drying up.
Currently, the organization is seeking companies that are willing to sign a three-year sponsorship deal starting in 2022.
As of Jan. 31, the organization said five companies have signed on, including Airweave Inc., Ajinomoto Co. and Mitsui Fudosan Co.

Olympics: Shoma Uno hits ice in pre-games practice but coach on his mind.
Japan's Shoma Uno got his figure skates on the ice for the first time at the Beijing Games on Thursday, training at the Capital Indoor Stadium on the same day his coach revealed he has tested positive for the coronavirus.
Focusing heavily on tuning up his jumps, the 2018 Olympic Games men's silver medalist ran through his short program choreography and landed four quads -- the flip, loop, salchow and toe loop.

ASEAN won't invite Myanmar foreign minister to meeting.
ASEAN will not invite Myanmar's foreign minister to an upcoming meeting, a Cambodian official said Thursday, as the regional bloc of nations struggles to agree on whether to include senior representatives of Myanmar's army rulers.
Cambodian foreign ministry spokesman Chum Sounry told The Associated Press that member states failed to reach a consensus on inviting Wunna Maung Lwin to its retreat of foreign ministers scheduled for Feb. 16-17 in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

Record number of child abuse cases reported in 2021.
A record 108,050 cases of suspected child abuse were were referred to child welfare centers by police in Japan last year, the National Police Agency said Feb. 3.
The cases involved minors aged 18 or younger.
Although the figure is still preliminary, data since 2004, when the agency began collecting figures, show that the number of police reports to child welfare centers keeps increasing year after year.

Nintendo ups full-year profit outlook despite slower Switch sales.
Nintendo Co. on Thursday raised its net profit forecast for the current business year through March to 400 billion yen ($3.5 billion) from an earlier projected 350 billion yen on hopes for robust demand for new game titles.
But it also cut the sales forecast for its Switch consoles to 23 million units from 24 million in fiscal 2021, affected by the global shortage of semiconductors.

Celebrities toss ceremonial beans at Setsubun festival in Chiba.
Fewer beans were tossed out by fewer celebrities at this year's Setsubun ceremony at Naritasan Shinshoji temple here on Feb. 3, as the COVID-19 pandemic continued impacting the annual tradition.
At this year's ceremony held on Setsubun, the last day of winter on the traditional lunar calendar, the beans were tossed in hopes of a bumper crop and the disappearance of the novel coronavirus.
